The Humane Society of the United States

We are unable to respond to individual email or phone inquiries about pet-related topics; however, we provide answers to most frequently asked questions below.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not a shelter, parent organization or regulatory/investigatory agency for local humane societies, animal shelters, animal care and control agencies or rescue groups. These groups are independent organizations governed by their own boards of directors or by city or county officials. To find your local organization, visit and enter your zip code, or look in your telephone book under "Animal Shelter," "Animal Control," "Humane Society" or "SPCA."

If your pet is ill or injured, contact a local veterinarian immediately. The HSUS does not provide individual counseling about a pet's health.
