Development Writer and Editor

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Development Writer and Editor for the Philanthropy department. The primary purpose of this position is to serve the department’s aggressive constituency development and fundraising goals through writing, editing, and proofing communication and solicitation vehicles for print, online, and oral presentation.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Serving as the principal writer for all donor fundraising communications including major donor proposals and quarterly stewardship reports that persuade charitable investment in priority programs;
  • Initiating additional writing projects that help illustrate and capture the excitement and importance of the organization’s priorities and campaigns in order to encourage financial support;
  • Writing annual report articles, donor correspondence, invitations to HSUS events, promotional copy, and specialized appeals for individual Philanthropy directors and staff as a whole, attending to HSUS style and strengthening the company brand and voice;
  • Maintaining familiarity and knowledge of the HSUS programs, goals, objectives, and accomplishments and translate the information into accurate, compelling interpretations  of the organization’s work for use internally and externally;
  • Proofing and copyediting departmental materials; working with the editorial team on edits of larger organizational projects and promotional materials;
  • Working with the creative team within the Communications department to conceptualize designs, generate ideas, and ensure branding consistency;
  • Serving as the point person between the Philanthropy and Communications department on philanthropy and program or campaign projects and function as the department’s publication manager for projects designed or printed through Publications and help keep printed projects on schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in writing, communications, journalism, English or related  field or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of five years’ experience as a professional writer/editor required, preferably in an animal/environmental or other non-profit advocacy type organization desired;
  • Must be able to understand and translate complex issues, programs, and philosophies into effective communication;
  • Must have ability to write persuasive and engaging direct marketing copy and donor proposals based on established guidelines;
  • Must have excellent copyediting and proofreading skills and knowledge of the publication process;
  • Graphic design experience is highly desired;
  • Must be able to work under pressure, juggle competing priorities and able to meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment.
