Donor and Foundation Relations Specialist

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Donor and Foundation Relations Specialist, Fund for Animals for the Major Gifts department. The primary purpose of this position is to advance the work of the Fund for Animals, by identifying, researching, strategizing, cultivating, and soliciting gifts with an emphasis on mid-level individual donors and foundations.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing a portfolio of gift prospects of $500 to $5k and foundations using a Moves Management framework
    • In collaboration with senior staff will create a strategic plan to secure a minimum of $1M in foundation grants and gifts, including renewals, upgrades and new sources that support institutional priorities;
    • Developing and managing a calendar for proposals, reports, and other communications with current and prospective funders;
    • Writing letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports and other correspondence required by foundations;
    • Providing support to the major gift team and maintaining a library of reports and proposals on care centers and other Fund projects;
    • Researching and identifying new funding prospects;
  • Coordinating with the department directors to implement major donor cultivations and solicitation strategies to secure funding for capital priorities in order to reach goals;
  • Conducting personal donor visits to develop relationships with major donors and donor prospects;
  • Collaborating with the Events and Conferences team on activities or events at the Fund facility and in support of the Fund;
  • Engaging volunteers,  executive leaders, and program and campaign representatives in fundraising activities;
  • Maintaining data and contacts in the CRM with accuracy and completeness to document progress;
  • Assisting animal care facilities with developing and targeting local fundraising initiatives including with events and visits to the care centers and maintaining advanced knowledge of development techniques and fundraising best practices to interact capably with donors and their advisors;
  • Supporting the mission and philosophy of the Fund and maintaining a working knowledge of the priority campaigns as well as relevant local and regional initiatives.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience;
  • Minimum three years of Development experience with proven success in securing a million dollars annually;
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and building relationships with highly rated prospects and donors and ability to communicate the mission and programs in ways to excite and motivate ;
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) skills;
  • Must be able and willing to travel as well as work extended hours;
  • Must have strong organizational skills and have flexibility to meet deadlines;
  • Must have knowledge of the foundation grant making community in animal welfare and protection, wildlife conservation, or related fields to be able to connect with major foundation funders.
