Public Relations Associate

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's most effective animal protection organization , is seeking a Public Relations Associate for the Marketing and Communications department of Humane Society International (HSI).    The main responsibility of this position is to advance the mission and message of the organization by identifying and cultivating opportunities to showcase our work and be a lead on public relations strategies and tactics for the global public relations team.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Writing and/or editing press releases, advisories, op-eds, letters to the editor, captions for photographs and other collateral material for the news media;
  • Serving as the HSI spokesperson and pitching HSI issues and generating story ideas for the media; will be responsible for building relationships with reporters on behalf of the organization and researching media to determine trends for pitching issues with an emphasis to include international and foreign language outlets; will coordinate international press conferences and respond to inquiries for background information, photo/video and interviews with HSI spokespeople from news media;
  • Working closely with HSI communications staff and consultants to develop and implement public relations strategies tailored for a specific country or region and providing support to achieve best outcomes;
  • Managing HSI’s newsroom and other media assets; publishing press releases on HSI.org and selecting photo and video assets to promote to the media; will also draft and edit issue briefs, talking points and compiling press packets;
  • Monitoring media for mentions of HSI in the news and compiling a list of clips on a weekly basis and providing quarterly metrics to senior staff;
  • Managing internal communications trainings for HSI employees and preparing HSI spokespeople for interviews;
  • Selecting and overseeing interns.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a public or media relations agency or press office of a non-profit organization, government agency or Congressional office;
  • Prior supervisory experience is highly desired;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to build and foster relationships;
  • Strong working knowledge of public relations computer programs and processes;
  • International experience and/or knowledge of a second language is strongly preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public relations competencies required and accreditation is desired;
  • Knowledge of AP style strongly desired;
  • Must have working knowledge of project management to meet deadlines;
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence and ability and willingness to work outside of standard business hours.
