Public Relations Manager

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Public Relations Manager for its Publc Relations department. The main responsibility of this position is to proactively position The HSUS in print and broadcast media and manage the staff to set them up for success.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing and delegating incoming projects via the organization’s project management system;
  • Helping the senior director to manage, train, and coordinate members of the department to ensure they have the resources and knowledge to meet and/or exceed departmental goals;
  • Assisting the Senior Director with hiring, data collection, developing work flow processes, setting departmental goals and providing strategic communication counsel to other departments in the organization;
  • In conjunction with the Public Information Officer, providing media relations services and coordinating assistance for other channels in the HSUS Marketing/Communications team on the site of deployments and fundraising events;
  • Building relationships with reporters on behalf of the organization including in-person meetings, or bringing a subject expert to the meeting;
  • Drafting, editing, routing and distributing press releases, letters to the editor, op-eds, and other materials for the media;
  • Pitching HSUS issues and generating story ideas for the media and researching media to determine trends for pitching issues as needed;
  • Managing media training and providing continued coaching to HSUS staff in their role as spokespersons;
  • Working with the Senior Director to determine promotional techniques and strategy for individual issues that are the most advantageous to the organization;
  • Working with the Public Affairs Advisor to address misinformation about the organization in the media and reputation management as is relates to mass media;
  • Working with the Public Relations Specialists to provide counsel  on strategies and tactics;
  • Working with the Senior Director to set goals and objectives for the department and ensuring the departments is achieving the goals;
  • Coordinate media inquiries and setting up interviews with appropriate spokespeople and providing background information and materials as needed;
  • Coordinating workshops, media tours, and press conferences as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism or English or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of four or more years of experience in a public relations agency, or the press office of a non-profit organization required; government agency experience or Congressional office preferred;
  • Must have ability to work collaboratively and have the ability to perceive the needs of subordinates and respond accordingly;
  • Must have ability to remain calm under pressure;
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills (required) and knowledge of public relations software (preferred);
  • Accreditation in public relations is desired;
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and ability to manage performance to achieve results;
  • Must be able to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Must have propensity to be creative, proactive, and self-motivated in the completion of assigned accountabilities;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills required for planning, executing and following up on issues and responsibilities to meet deadlines;
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
