Accounts Payable Clerk (Interim)

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking an Interim Accounts Payable Clerk for the Accounting department. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure bills are processed, paid, and properly recorded in the general ledger expeditiously.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Auditing incoming invoices, processing check requests, working with budget managers to obtain budget code approvals, and entering invoices in the Accounting systems for review and posting to the general ledger;
  • Generating ACH and check edit reports for review and approval;
  • Processing payments correlating to invoices on assigned payment days;
  • Verifying signatures are obtained for checks, and distributed to the appropriate party (mailing/special delivery/pick-up, etc.); ensuring that EFT email notifications are sent to vendors on process payment days;
  • Transmitting positive pay files to designate financial institution on the days that you process check payments;
  • Obtaining tax and banking information/forms from vendors as needed;
  • Responding to employee and vendor inquiries to advise status of account payments;
  • Creating and maintaining a current Desk Reference that will describe your daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities in a bulleted list.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and some college experience in accounting or a related field preferred;
  • Minimum two years of full cycle Accounts Payable experience in an Accounting department required;
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to maintain composure and respond respectfully and appropriately to inquiries from internal and external customers;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Good organizational skills;
  • Strong knowledge of Great Plains accounting software;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly, Excel preferred;
  • Good attention to detail;
  • Ability to work overtime (evenings/weekends) as necessary.
