Animal Care Specialist

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Animal Care Specialist for our Fund for Animals Wildlife Center (FFAWC) in Ramona California.  The main responsibility of this position is to oversee all aspects of facility compliance, animal capture/containment, and general safety of the personnel who work with the animals.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing and performing rescue and release field operations including the training and dispatching of rescuers for wild animals;
  • Researching and inspecting properties to secure approvals from property owners to utilize release sites;
  • Maintaining enclosures, habitats, vehicles, care supplies and tools;
  • Providing safety and animal containment support for medical and husbandry procedures;
  • Reviewing, developing and/or revising standard operating procedures or other reports;
  • Conducting or coordinating safety and evacuation trainings;
  • Assisting husbandry staff with scheduled chemical and physical captures on site;
  • Assuring effective training of skills and knowledge on the proper use of capture and containment equipment as well as presenting educational lectures as requested;
  • Inspecting structures to ensure proper care, maintenance and safety as well as resolving problems to mitigate risk;
  • Managing utilities and utility vendors;
  • Supervising, training and mentoring volunteers and interns;
  • Maintaining or reviewing federally mandated and non-mandated incident and damage reports;
  • Assisting with the preparation of the annual budget;
  • Responsible for facility compliance with California OSHA requirements including, but not limited to keeping SDS sheets current as well as generating and facilitating employee monthly safety trainings.


  • High School diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Three years progressive experience in animal husbandry and/or degrees in wildlife management;
  • Must remain current in CPR and first-aid certification;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with 3 years clean driving record;
  • Must complete continuing education credit as required by the State of California Department of Fish and Game for wildlife rehabilitation;
  • Advanced knowledge of animal husbandry and rehabilitation;
  • Basic principles of operant conditioning and protected contact system;
  • Must be able to move/lift 50 pounds and endure occasional long workdays (up to 12 hours) and maintain focus, accuracy and physical activities required by job;
  • Good communication and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Must have or obtain and maintain an up-to-date rabies prophylaxis and titer;
  • Must be comfortable with Microsoft Word/Excel/Publisher;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to handle complex situations with sound judgment and problem solving skills;
  • Demonstrated to be proactive and self-motivated;
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle tasks and demands.
