Animal Rescue Responder II (Reserve Status)

The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking an Animal Rescue Responder II for the Animal Cruelty, Rescue and Response department. This position is responsible for working with the Senior Director, the Deputy Director, Operation, and the Senior Manager, Animal Care to implement all aspects of the Animal Rescue Team’s response program during a disaster/emergency. . 

This position will be responsible for

  • Implementing standard operating procedures, in close coordination with the Animal Rescue Team leadership, to carry out the Animal Rescue field program;
  • Maintaining working knowledge of Animal Rescue standard operating procedures and implementing during response;
  • Working with HSUS Animal Rescue Team members and other volunteers during field response including, rescue, transport, and sheltering operations;
  • Traveling extensively on very short notice, assisting in the field as necessary during a disaster/emergency and working outside of normal business hours on a regular basis;
  • Responding to inquiries and providing accurate reporting including daily sitreps, animal census information as requested, and after action reports;
  • Serving as the shelter, veterinary, field, or logistics team lead for animal rescue deployments;
  • Conducting media interviews with comfort in accordance with HSUS guidelines.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma and three years’ experience with handling animals, particular in distress;
  • Experience in some form of emergency operations or response;
  • Ability to safely and humanely handle a variety of species from dogs to horses and be versed on husbandry and care practices for those species;
  • Advanced knowledge of ICS and NIMS with the understanding of how to operate within this structure during deployments;
  • Strong organization skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Public speaking skills;
  • PC proficiency to include word processing and the Internet;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and maintain good communication with other HSUS staff;
  • Must be able to be on the road a number of days a month and to work outside standard business hours.
