Coordinator, Animal Care

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Coordinator, Animal Care for the Animal Rescue Team (ART) department. This position will work with the Senior Manager, Animal Care to support the Animal Rescue program in disaster/emergency response, as well as disaster education and planning, with specificity in the management of recruitment for the Dog Fighting Rescue Coalition program, and our co-located or natural disaster shelter services.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Responding to disasters/emergencies and conduct damage assessments of impacted areas;
  • Working with HSUS ART members and other volunteers during field response including rescue, transport, and sheltering operations;
  • Planning, developing, and implementing strategies to carry out the Animal Rescue field program with a focus on animal enrichment, veterinary treatments and care, and natural disaster sheltering;
  • Maintaining working knowledge of and contribute to the documentation of Animal Rescue standard operating procedures, focusing on animal enrichment, veterinary medical management, veterinary treatments and care, and natural disaster sheltering;
  • Providing accurate reporting including daily situation reports, and animal census information;
  • Serving as lead for any type of HSUS ART sheltering operation to include not limited to: volunteer management, vendor relationships, shelter set-up/maintenance/breakdown, supply acquisition, logistics, daily reporting, and paperwork management;
  • Developing and maintaining operational contacts throughout the country with particular emphasis on animal enrichment, and veterinary field/disaster medicine;
  • Presenting training programs throughout the country;
  • Representing the HSUS Animal Rescue program at meetings and conferences and prepare presentations;
  • Writing internal reports and respond to routine requests and correspondence regarding animal issues;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and CPDT-KA certification required;
  • Minimum three years’ experience in some form of emergency operations or response, or in shelter management;
  • Animal handling skills and knowledge of animal protection issues, animal control, and shelter experience (particularly animals under stress);
  • At least three years’ experience in some form of emergency operations or response, or in shelter management;
  • At least three years proven supervisory and management experience;
  • Working knowledge and experience with NIMS/ICS or commitment to take and pass required courses within six months;
  • Knowledge of prophylactic animal health practices in a shelter environment;
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communications skills, including a comfort with public speaking;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills;
  • Proven ability to liaise with governmental organizations and partnering organizations;
  • Ability to influence internal and external stakeholders;
  • Strong track record of collaboration and teamwork approach ensuring cooperation among diverse teams;
  • Ability to travel extensively on very short notice to assist in a disaster response as requested.; Must be able to be on the road a number of days a month and to work outside standard business hours;
  • Ability to work under pressure with confidence;
  • Ability to cope with ambiguity, make reasoned decisions with limited information available, and effectively demonstrate ability to handle emergency situations with a calm demeanor;
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt best practices to our organizational needs;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and maintain good communication with other HSUS staff;
  • Indirectly supervises other members of ART in deployment, HSUS staff, volunteers, vendors, and contract staff.
