Director of Bequests, Midwest Region

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Director of Bequests for the Midwest region. The individual will work remotely from the Midwest and will be responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of present supporters and new donor prospects within the designated region, who are interested in including HSUS in their will, trust, or other long range financial and estate plans.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Generating 150 bequest commitments annually from new bequest prospects with formalized cultivation and solicitation plans;
  • Successfully soliciting $8 million in signed Letters of Intent commitments annually from supporters in the mid-Central US;
  • Stewarding 100-150 Humane Legacy supporters with gift commitments ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000 along with meeting with bequest prospects and Humane Legacy members in the designated region;
  • Organizing 2 regional events annually showcasing HSUS programs to present supporters and prospects;
  • Staying abreast of company campaigns and program initiatives and relaying important updates to Humane Legacy members.
  • Escalating complex bequest requests and bequest intents to the Senior Director;
  • Generating $25k in outright annual donations from the assigned Humane Legacy portfolio;
  • Creating and soliciting charitable gift annuities using the CRM database systems.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required;
  • Minimum of ten or more years’ experience in estate law profession, financial services background or directing a nonprofit estate planning program;
  • Candidate must have excellent writing and organizational skills; experience with public speaking; attention to detail and an ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Possess a demonstrated ability to work independently, under pressure and on deadline;
  • Knowledge of moves management/CRM database or other relational database;
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Must have ability and willingness to travel;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to animal protection is preferred.
