Foundation Relations Manager

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Foundation Relations Manager for the Institutional Giving department in Gaithersburg, MD. The main responsibility of this position is to advance the work of the organization by identifying, researching, strategizing, cultivating, and soliciting foundation grants.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing a portfolio of foundations focusing on levels of 10k or above;
  • Collaborating in creating a strategic annual plan to secure 1M in foundation grants, including renewals, upgrades, and new sources that support institutional priorities;
  • Developing and managing a calendar of deadlines for proposals, reports, and other communications with current and prospective foundation funders;
  • Writing letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports and other correspondence as required;
  • Providing writing and editing support to program staff that are pursuing foundation grants and to the major gifts team; will be responsible for maintaining a library of reports and proposals on major domestic campaigns and initiatives;
  • Engaging volunteer and executive leadership and other company representatives in foundation, fundraising activities;
  • Maintaining data and contacts in the fundraising database with accuracy on activity, actions, proposals, contact information and documenting progress;
  • Collaborating with internal staff to build and sustain a successful foundation fundraising program;
  • Consulting with the accounting team on budget and financial reports for restricted activity;
  • Maintaining advanced knowledge and understanding of the foundation community and grant-making trends and related activity;
  • Supporting the mission of the organization and maintaining knowledge of priority campaigns as well as relevant local and regional initiatives;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of three years’ development experience with proven success in foundation or corporate fundraising of grants of 10k or more;
  • Must be a strategic thinker, writer and speaker to be able to articulate the organizational mission in ways that appeal to and fit with foundation priorities;
  • Must have extensive experience writing about complex issues and in response to multiple deadlines;
  • Must have ability to build and foster relationships;
  • Must have knowledge of the foundation grant community in animal welfare and protection, wildlife conservation or related fields to suggest familiarity with foundation funders.
