Maintenance and IT Specialist

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Maintenance and IT Specialist for our Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch (CABBR). The responsibilities of this position is to provide overall proper maintenance to vehicles, tractors, heavy equipment and all internal roads, as well as completing repairs and upgrades to equipment, buildings and site infrastructure as well as to maintain, manage and upgrade all Information Technology (IT).

This position will be responsible for:

  • Performing maintenance and repair of equipment;
  • Managing assigned tasks, maintaining logs to document all in-progress, and completed maintenance;
  • Assisting with the construction, upkeep and repairs of all enclosures, habitats, buildings, equipment, and site infrastructure;
  • Maintaining, managing and organizing inventory of all plumbing electrical and vehicle maintenance supplies;
  • Working with HSUS IT department on all CABBR information technology and telephone equipment including, upgrading and maintaining hardware, software and other IT services;
  • Installing and configuring hardware, software and site infrastructure systems as required;
  • Maintaining and providing monthly reports for technology equipment and systems;
  • Providing individual technical support through teaching, communicating training opportunities to users and assisting individuals with projects involving hardware software usage;
  • Coordinating network maintenance and repairs of technology equipment thru internal requests and HSUS IT department assignments;
  • Supporting animal care teams as needed with daily husbandry;
  • Assisting in safe/humane handling of animals during treatments and other handling routines and maintain procedures to minimize stress on animals.


  • High School diploma or equivalent required;
  • Minimum two-five years of experience in vehicle maintenance;
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in facility maintenance;
  • Experience with Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows server AD Users and Computers; Exchange 2000/2003;
  • Experience with LAN/WAN technology including Cisco routers, T1 configuration, firewall, and TCPIP protocols preferred;
  • Experience with cabling and switch operations and maintenance preferred;
  • Must be able to safely operate heavy equipment, trailers and vehicles;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, programming with Visual Basic if needed;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to the goals and programs of the HSUS, and to compassionate, highest-quality animal care;
  • Must be able to work in an unsupervised environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Must be able to operate heavy equipment (i.e. skid steer, backhoe and tractors) and safely use a cutting torch;
  • Must be able to lift/move 50-75 pounds;
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions and perform occasional long workdays and maintain focus;
  • Must be able to work with/around a variety of animals;
  • Must be able to negotiate trails and moderately dense undergrowth during rescue operations;
  • Must be able to work in a safety driven environment;
  • Must be able to comply with all policies and regulations that apply to assigned tasks.
