Manager, Accounts Payable

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Manager, Accounts Payable for its Accounting department.  This position is responsible for managing and coordinating activities required to ensure an accurate accounts payable system as well as to develop and recommend policies and procedures to govern the payment of HSUS and affiliates invoices.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Planning, scheduling, and directing the work of the accounts payable staff;
  • Ensuring the timely processing of invoices daily as well as to ensure work is evenly distributed among Accounts Payable (AP) staff;
  • Determining the best method of payment for all disbursements, in order to minimize cost, maximize purchase discounts, and optimize vendor relationships;
  • Examining and verifying accuracy on transactions performed by the AP staff;
  • Generating weekly reports charting team performance on production;
  • Overseeing  the set-up of domestic and international vendor records;
  • Overseeing Workflow Management and train budget managers on Papersave and General Ledger Chart of Accounts;
  • Managing the month-end closing process to include reviewing and approving all reconciliations and journal entries performed;
  • Reviewing all payments made by the AP team on a weekly basis to ensure the accuracy and validity;
  • Collaborating with the implementation team for the new accounting software and train new staff members after implementation;
  • Assisting with annual financial audits for HSUS and its Affiliates;
  • Preparing monthly reconciliations and analysis as required;
  • Answering both external and internal inquires.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of five or more years’ experience in an accounts payable environment;
  • Supervisory experience required;
  • Nonprofit experience a plus;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics (Great Plains) desirable;
  • Knowledge of financial reconciliation and analysis;
  • Proficient in of Microsoft Excel;
  • Must be knowledgeable of current banking systems in the U.S. and abroad, preferably, Canada,    Mexico, India, Costa Rica, United Kingdom and Belgium;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Must be highly organized and able to able to re-prioritize as needed;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem solving;
  • The ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Must be able to work hours in excess of 40 per week when required.
