Manager, Education and Events

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Manager, Education and Events for the Companion Animals department. This position will work under the general direction of the Vice President, Companion Animals to ensure successful development, management, and execution of Animal Care Expo, including yearlong coordination and outreach activities to secure speakers and workshops. This position will also collaborate with the Companion Animals team to create and cultivate content and curriculum for Animal Sheltering Magazine, Animalsheltering.org, The Scoop (email newsletter) and social media content.

This position will be responsible for

  • Planning, coordinating and executing educational conferences, public and fundraising events;
  • Developing content and scheduling for Animal Care Expo;
  • Working with communications, marketing, and sponsorship manager to help promote events;
  • Coordinating with fundraisers and other departments on events, sponsorship/partnership outreach and fundraising efforts;
  • Managing Request for Proposal solicitation, site selection and contract negotiations;
  • Overseeing space allocation, schedule, and meeting specifications;
  • Working with vendors on food/beverage selection, preparation of gift bags, printing of collateral materials, audio/visual needs, transportation for attendees, and other outsourced operations;
  • Working with internal staff to encourage attendance at events using various forms of communication and media outlets;
  • Working with and providing support to exhibitors, sponsors, speakers, entertainment and VIPs in support of event success;
  • Managing inventory and storage of event supplies;
  • Maintaining records of all event aspects, including budgets, and reviewing event invoices;
  • Developing post-attendee event evaluations along with gathering event statistics to analyze event performance for future improvement;
  • Staying well informed on industry trends and best practices;
  • Other duties, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum 5 years of conference and meeting planning experience;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in animal sheltering, animal welfare, or similar;
  • Non-profit or Association experience is strongly preferred;
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Superior strategic thinking and critical reasoning skills; creative and forward thinking;
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment;
  • Ability to coordinate, manage and execute several events at one time;
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively;
  • Proficient in Windows, and Microsoft products including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Basic knowledge of web-based registration and database systems;
  • Ability to and willingness to travel and occasionally work irregular hours, such as evenings and weekends;
  • Understanding of and interest in animal issues.
