Outreach Assistant (part time)

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking an Outreach Assistant (PT), working 25 hours per week, for its Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association - Rural Area Veterinary Services (HSVMA-RAVS). This position is responsible for working with RAVS Outreach Veterinarian and program staff to provide direct community outreach in identified rural communities, share information, resources and support for animal caretakers, build relationships and support efforts to improve animal health and welfare in community of focus.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with planning, advertising and implementation of community outreach, presentations and clinics;
  • Participating in direct care veterinary wellness visits, veterinary field teaching clinics and targeted spay/neuter clinics;
  • Identifying animals in need of veterinary wellness care and spay/neuter and assisting with coordinating care and follow-up visits;
  • Serving as a liaison to connect community members with services provided by RAVS and by partner agencies;
  • Delivering excellent customer service toward clients and community members;
  • Engaging community residents and others in program activities;
  • Developing contacts and relationships to support increased awareness about community animal health and welfare issues;
  • Collecting and submitting outreach data;
  • Preparing and submitting project reports as required;
  • Maintaining confidential client files and information;
  • Assisting with maintenance and organization of project supplies and equipment;
  • Participating in weekly communication with supervisor as well as attending all required staff meetings and training sessions;
  • Pursuing ongoing training and education and strive to continually expand personal knowledge of animal health, husbandry and behavior.


  • High school diploma or GED required;
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Minimum one year of professional work experience in customer service, client relations, community outreach work, community organizing, campaigning, or sales experience required;
  • Minimum one year experience in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, and/or animal training highly preferred;
  • Knowledge of animal health/welfare and/or strong desire to learn;
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Valid driver’s license with strong driving record and possession of the minimum automobile insurance required by state law;
  • Ability to work long hours under potentially difficult physical and emotional conditions;
  • Computer literacy and competency in Windows/Microsoft products, including Word, Outlook, Excel required and experience with PowerPoint, and Access preferred;
  • Fluency in English required, fluency in Apache preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to present oneself and the organization professionally; to communicate respectfully and engage positively with individuals of varying backgrounds and education levels;
  • Self-motivation, responsibility and ability to work well independently as well as part of team and with or without direct supervision;
  • Ability to navigate using maps and/or GPS.
