Paralegal

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Paralegal to join the Office of the General Counsel team in Washington, DC. The primary purpose of this position will be to help manage the organization’s compliance matters, including ballot initiative and political action committee compliance, and to provide support in the areas of electronic discovery and general nonprofit corporate compliance.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Liaison with outside counsel and vendors, accounting, and various program departments to collect information and manage compliance reporting;
  • Creating and maintaining recordkeeping systems and auditing trail of decisions and requests related to ballot initiatives and political action committee activities;
  • Researching and monitoring developments in state laws relevant to ballot initiative and political action committee compliance;
  • Assisting in training staff in campaign finance compliance practices;
  • Preservation scoping, including identifying and interviewing custodians, and locating relevant data repositories;
  • Coordinating the issuance of litigation holds, reminders, and tracking;
  • Working with the IT Department to ensure preservation of relevant data repositories;
  • Executing requests for collection of data and oversee the transfer of data from HSUS to outside counsel and vendors;
  • Communicating with in-state counsel on ballot initiatives and political action committee matters;
  • Supporting in-house and outside counsel in response to state audits of ballot committee and political action committee disclosure reports, and defending ballot and/or political action in litigation;
  • Engaging and coordinating e-discovery vendor services, timelines, and budgets;
  • Other duties as assigned, including general nonprofit corporate compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal certificate required;
  • Minimum one year of experience in legal or legislative affairs preferred;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Superior organizational and recordkeeping skills, highly desired plus ability, handle multiple deadlines, and prioritize effectively;
  • Familiarity with Westlaw preferred;
  • Political campaign experience or litigation support experience preferred;
  • Familiarity with electronic document review platforms, such as Relativity and Concordance preferred.
