Public Policy Coordinator

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Public Policy Coordinator for its Campaigns section. The main responsibility of this position is to work directly with the Public Policy Director to help create and manage strategic coalitions and relationships with lawmakers, policy makers, animal advocates, and other stakeholders.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Engaging with grassroots advocates and the media to generate public support for legislative priorities; developing and managing the creation of campaign materials, including: LTEs, op-eds, reports, fact sheets and online materials;
  • Drafting online content and communications for both internal and external distribution to advance legislative priorities;
  • Lobbying local and state- elected public officials and their offices in support of passing positive legislation or in rejecting harmful legislation;
  • Collaborating with State Directors to develop strategies and tactics to advance priorities;
  • Maintaining databases of advocate contact info, investigations, letter to the editor submissions and allies;
  • Attending monthly meetings and providing weekly progress reports; submitting Lobbying Reporting form as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work experience;
  • Minimum of one year of public policy experience required;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as strong research and critical thinking and advocacy skills;
  • Knowledge of farm animal protection strongly desired;
  • Working knowledge of local policymaking, structure and legislative processes;
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, document organization, and strong familiarity with online research tools);
  • Candidate must have ability and willingness to travel along with flexibility to work outside business hours as needed.
