Senior Accountant, Compliance and Tax

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Accountant, Compliance and Tax.  The main responsibility of this position is to assist in ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, as well as the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger with an emphasis on IRS Form 990, SOP 98-2 joint cost allocations, state charitable registrations, and accrued and prepaid expenses.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Preparing monthly adjusting journal entries and account reconciliations of accrued and prepaid expenses and other assets;
  • Preparing IRS Forms (990) and applicable state forms, notices and the organization of schedules and permanent work paper documentation for the assigned entities;
  • Coordinating with team members responsible for preparing other entities’ forms to create an efficient system of information and data gathering;
  • Collaborating with those performing all levels of review within the organization and consulting with professional tax preparation firm for any guidance/ issues;
  • Ensuring the final return is filed accurately and timely according to specific internal deadlines, and extensions prepared and in proper permanent files;
  • Analyzing direct mail materials in accordance with the SOP 98-2 joint cost allocation standard and HSUS’s methodology to determine proper allocation standard for the annual statement of functional expenses;
  • Updating monthly schedules with joint costs and applying the methodology as well as presenting results to members of finance and fundraising departments;
  • Working with an external resource and completing state charitable registrations;
  • Compiling and maintaining files of permanent document changes and necessary financial data and signatures;
  • Ensuring timely completion and mailing of required forms and maintain copies for internal records;
  • Reporting monthly of direct mail revenues and costs to ensure accuracy;
  • Maintaining office lease agreements and rent payment schedules as well as preparing monthly journal entries and account reconciliations for deferred rent and leasehold improvement accounts using amortization schedules and assisting in updating schedules as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in accounting and tax compliance;
  • Not-for-profit accounting experience a plus;
  • Extensive knowledge of not-for-profit federal and state tax filings, particularly 990s;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word;
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting software applications;
  • Strong accounting knowledge including preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, schedules and analysis;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Organizational, project, and priority management skills for planning, executing and following up on issues, projects and daily responsibilities in order to meet established deadlines;
  • Oral and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of accounting standard SOP 98-2 a plus;
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours per week when needed.
