Specialist, Training and Development

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Specialist, Training and Development for our Human Capital and Development department. The main responsibility of this position will be to conduct training needs assessments for the organization, and create in-person and online learning modules, live web-based training sessions, and supporting materials following an instructional design process. Also responsible for delivery of skill-based training, coaching, and mentoring learners.

    This position is responsible for:

    • Leading the design, development, and delivery of quality training programs for various delivery types (online, blended, in-person) across a wide-variety of topics, including management and leadership development, fundraising, budgeting, etc.;
    • Designing, managing, and maintaining training evaluations, documentation, and record keeping via a learning management system;
    • Developing and maintaining toolkits for managers and employees on topics such as supervision, performance management, recruiting, etc.;
    • Coordinating and maintaining training projects to ensure successful development and implementation of training that are on budget and delivered on time;
    • Planning, scheduling, and facilitating project meetings and providing regular status updates to relevant stakeholders and subject matter experts;
    • Completing various project management and administrative tasks as needed;
    • Collaborating with Grassroots Outreach and Engagement staff to advise on the development of training resources for volunteer staff;
    • Providing support for special projects as required by the Human Capital team.


    • Bachelor’s degree in business, organizational development, instructional design, education, or other related field required; Master’s in similar field preferred;
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in designing, developing, and delivering learning solutions in a variety of formats and for diverse audiences;
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in creating e-learning training materials using authoring tools such as Captivate and Storyline, etc.;
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience delivering training both online and in-person;
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
    • Advanced knowledge and application of adult learning theory;
    • Advanced experience with SCORM and AICC;
    • Able to act independently and with minimal direction;
    • Strong digital/technical aptitude as well as advanced MS Office skills;
    • Strong consulting and relationship management skills and a track record of delivery and impact;
    • Ability to deliver in a climate of ambiguity and with technical limitations;
    • Must be a collaborator, team player, and willing to pitch in as needed.
