Staff Accountant

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Staff Accountant for our Accounting department. The main responsibility of this position is to maintain and generate monthly financial statements for management and staff to facilitate decision making regarding budget expenditures. Ensure accuracy and consistency of data in the general ledger accounting system.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Preparing, updating and maintaining monthly financial statements in draft and final versions for executives and budget managers/department heads to enable financial decision making regarding spending and effective use of organization resources;
  • Ensuring accuracy of data integration from the accounting system to the reporting system on a daily basis as well as maintaining mapping files to ensure data is retrievable for all reports;
  • Updating and maintaining fixed asset records on a monthly basis in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and organization policies, including a monthly reconciliation to the general ledger to ensure all records are complete and accurate;
  • Generating depreciation reports from the fixed asset subsidiary ledger/software and use these to create the monthly expense entry in the main accounting software, coordinating an annual inventory of fixed assets to ensure organization records are complete and accurate;
  • Creating, assigning general ledger accounting codes and maintaining an accurate list of all used and available codes as requested;
  • Reconciling selected balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis to the general ledger to ensure accuracy of data and compliance with GAAP and internal policies;
  • Communicating with staff regarding monthly financial reports and providing assistance as needed to explain the data;
  • Providing periodic trainings and coordinating journal entries to correct coding errors as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience required:
  • Minimum of one year of accounting experience;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel. Basic knowledge of Great Plains and Sage Intacct;
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills;
  • Basic analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Must be able to work hours in excess of 40 per week when required.
