Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission tables 2017 black bear hunt
After suspending a trophy hunt of Florida’s black bears in 2016, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted today to table a hunt in 2017 as well. Kate MacFall, Florida State Director for The HSUS, issued the following statement in response:

Flagship humane education magazine, Kind News, transfers to RedRover
Kind News magazine for children will enter a new chapter this summer, as its publication changes hands from The HSUS to RedRover, another national animal welfare organization. The June/July 2017 issue will mark the last time The HSUS publishes the magazine, which has been a flagship of the humane education world since 1983. Kind News teaches kids—and often, their parents and teachers—more about the animals who share our world and how best to care for them.

Young philanthropists of Humane Generation/Friends of Finn drive change for animals—and meet a few, too
Since The HSUS started Friends of Finn (named for Amanda Hearst’s dog, who came from a puppy mill) in 2010, the New York-based committee now known as Humane Generation/Friends of Finn has raised more than $2.3 million for the HSUS Puppy Mills Campaign.

Reward offered in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, fatal dog beating
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the brutal beating and death of a dog who was leashed in his yard in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

Reward offered in Charleston County animal cruelty case for dog who was chained, burned alive
The HSUS is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those individuals responsible for the gruesome torture and death of a dog who was killed earlier this week in Awendaw, South Carolina. Pet Helpers Adoption Shelter has offered an additional $1,000 reward, bringing the total to $6,000.

Cruelty-free beauty company Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics is re-launching its global best-selling New Shampoo Bar to encourage consumers to get behind The HSUS, HSLF, and HSI's global campaign to ban cosmetic animal testing and trade by signing their petition at www.endanimaltesting.org. Four individuals indicted, arrested on federal cockfighting charges
A Southern District of Alabama grand jury indicted four individuals on federal charges in connection with the investigation of a major cockfighting pit in Citronelle, Alabama. The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested the suspects, three of whom are from Alabama and one from Florida. In August 2016, The Humane Society of the United States assisted the FBI with searching the Citronelle property where they uncovered a huge arena with bleacher seating, concession stands, trophies, cockfighting paraphernalia and rental holding spaces for participants’ birds with room for more than 1,000 animals.

Manatees lose protection as USFWS removes endangered status for species
The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Legislative Fund are expressing disappointment that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that manatees in the United States and South America will no longer be listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act and will instead be considered threatened.
