What does the HSUS do?
The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's most effective animal protection organization. Since 1954, we've been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs.
The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research and farm animals. Together with our affiliates, we work across the nation and around the world to protect all animals through legislation, litigation, investigations, education, science, advocacy and field work. We also rescue and care for thousands of animals each year—but our primary mission is to prevent cruelty before it occurs.
How is the HSUS affiliated with my local humane society?
Local humane societies and SPCAs are independent entities and aren’t run or overseen by the HSUS (or any other national entity). The HSUS works with and supports local shelters in many ways, but running local animal shelters is not why we were founded. We’re here to tackle the biggest national and global fights for animals, systemic cruelties that are typically beyond the scope of local organizations to address. We support the work of shelters, humane societies and rescue groups through training, mentorship, public policy reform, assistance with large-scale rescues and disaster response, as well as other services.
How is the HSUS affiliated with other animal organizations?
We share some broad goals and philosophies with many groups working to advance animal protection, but the only entities we are directly affiliated with are Humane Society International (HSI), the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF), the Wildlife Land Trust, the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA), Black Beauty Ranch and Duchess Sanctuary.
