The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust is pleased to announce the promotion of Jim Reed to executive director. Jim has dedicated his academic and professional life to wildlife, and he has been with the Trust for over twenty-one years, managing and protecting the Trust’s many wildlife sanctuaries as director of stewardship. His extensive knowledge about the Trust’s protected lands, his well-established rapport with sanctuary landowners and his abundant resourcefulness, dedication and energy for protecting habitat for wildlife all make him ideally suited for taking on the executive director role.
In particular, his extensive knowledge and experience relating to wildlife, habitat management and permanent land preservation have informed his thoughtful guidance in developing and implementing the Trust’s humane stewardship practices. In addition, he continually recruits and trains to maintain an effective team of volunteer sanctuary monitors and cultivates positive relations and cooperative arrangements with state wildlife officers and neighbors near Trust lands. Indeed, Jim’s insights into all aspects of the Trust’s work on behalf of wildlife are invaluable to its near- and long-term strategic planning.
Prior to joining the Trust, Jim was the director of the environmental and forestry programs for a Tribal government, protecting treaty reserved rights and overseeing related on- and off-reservation environmental issues. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Frederick Community College in Maryland for outdoor recreation courses and has worked with the Yosemite National Park Search and Rescue Team in Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows, California, as an emergency medical technician for technical rescues. He has also held diverse wildlife and fisheries management positions with state and private entities, is the former president of Catoctin Land Trust and currently serves as a Sustainability Commissioner for the Frederick County Government in Maryland.
Jim has a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Biology from Hood College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Studies from Slippery Rock University and an Associate’s Degree in Wildlife and Park Management from Frederick Community College. He holds professional certifications in conducting phase one environmental assessments for commercial real estate and as a nationally registered emergency medical technician, and he holds commercial drone pilot and private pilot licenses.
